Friends of Biodiversity Show Their Support

We’re incredibly humbled and proud to report that together we raised $65,000 on the University of Wyoming Giving Day, October 20-21! This sets a new record, and we thank you for supporting us. We received a major gift of $50,000 from Don and Judy Legerski to support the UW Teton Graduate Scholars in Biodiversity.  Read about the impact of our donors here.

This is not a pine cone!

With the wildflowers gone and the last of the autumn leaves falling, now is the time to appreciate conifer trees! Do you know how many species are native to Wyoming? How many can you identify? Mullen Fire Field Trip 

On a warm Fall day, nearly 50 people joined us for a hike and helped us launch the Mullen Wildfire Community Science Initiative. We walked among the burn scars of the Mullen Fire, witnessed first-hand many of the adaptations native plants have to survive in ecosystems with fire, and learned how cheatgrass is the biggest threat impacting sagebrush ecosystems throughout the west. Be on the lookout for opportunities to monitor cheatgrass and microorganisms next Spring and Summer through the Initiative at our website.

UW’s Natural Science Treasures

Do you know that the largest collection of Rocky Mountain plants in the world is located at the University of Wyoming? The Rocky Mountain Herbarium holds 1.3 million plant specimens, the majority from our region. Both the Biodiversity Institute and the Herbarium are members of the UW Natural Science Collections Partnership.
