The Biodiversity Institute would like to congratulate Mason Lee -a staff member and practicing scientist, for her recent publication with the journal Herpetoculture. A perfect article for October, Mason's article explores cannibalism among The Texas blind salamanders (Eurycea rathbuni)...
Cannibalism occurs in over 1,300 species, and it can occur for a variety of reasons, including resource scarcity, availability of victims, parental care, and high densities. The cannibalism of eggs and larvae is widespread among salamanders. The Texas blind salamander (Eurycea rathbuni), a federally endangered species, has previously been observed cannibalizing eggs and larvae in captivity. This note describes the first documented observations of E. rathbuni adults cannibalizing other adults.
